It's pretty helpful, and not often included in the cheaper models. I also like the needle down position, which makes your needle always stop in the fabric so your project doesn't shift. For most sewing you will use straight stitch and zig zag. The text isn't that special, but I think it's a cute touch. You won't use 90% of the many stitches, but what I liked about this was the extended table and the ability to do the little text monograms which separates it from the other cheap Brothers. I was thinking about buying a higher end machine, but decided to start with something basic and see how far that gets me, since it is less than the repair on the more expensive machine. I sew semi-professionally, mostly quilts, and actually teach sewing classes, but my "regular" machine is broken and I can't do buttonholes and some other basic things on my other specialized machines. ETA I do the majority of my professional sewing on my straight stitch only machine, but sometimes you need a zig zag, etc.
I have a semi industrial brother 1500 straight stitch only and the brother basic serger 1034d. I agree the costco warranty makes it tempting, which is why I actually just bought this machine (for $139).
